Male Hormonal Acne
Usually when we hear about acne being influenced by hormonal levels it is always associated with women. We hear about how the menstrual cycle is responsible for large fluctuations in the hormones in women and this can be responsible for severe acne. However, this can also occur in men. All it requires are hormones and both men and women have them! So the fluctuations that occur in men that can result in acne are changes in testosterone, dihyroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and dehydrotestosterone (DHT). In a similar fashion to the hormonal acne in women these hormone fluctuations can cause the sebaceous glands to secrete too much oil which can cause acne.
Hormones tend to fluctuate first during the onset of puberty. Hormones begin changing at this time and because of that they more oil is secrete and acne tends to develop. Since men have more male hormones acne is often more severe in them. It is for this reason alone that people who use anabolic steroids can cause significant acne in them as well. So what is different about male acne? Well for one thing it can be increased with frequent and intense workouts.
Intense workouts can increase the production of testosterone which can then cause an increase in the amount of oil secreted which will lead to an increase in acne. It is this testosterone that can make the skin more likely to develop acne. This doesn’t mean that if you are an intense exerciser and a male that you have to stop exercising! All it requires is taking a shower immediately following your exercise session. This way the oil produced will be washed off the skin which will help reduce the chances of developing acne. The fact that men have a larger frame size than women impacts their metabolism and also tends to lead them to be more physically active which can increase testosterone and of course oil. So bottom line men, be aware that you too can develop acne from fluctuations in your hormones. This is not just exclusive to women! So a simple shower after exercising and of course, not taking steroids if you are an avid exerciser can help ward off hormonal acne!
If you are male and struggling with hormonal acne there are several treatment options available to you.
